Stop Chasing Clients - Let Them Come to You

Are you tired of the constant cycle of pitching, following up, and competing for freelance gigs against dozens (or hundreds) of other writers?
What if there was a way to have ideal clients seek you out instead?
I've been thinking a lot about what separates freelancers who constantly hustle for the next project from those who seem to effortlessly attract great clients.
The difference often comes down to one thing: thought leadership.
Now before you think "that's not for me"—thought leadership isn't about being famous or having all the answers. It's about sharing your unique perspective in a way that helps potential clients solve problems.
When you consistently share valuable insights:
- Clients come to you pre-sold on your expertise
- You spend less time explaining what you do
- You can command higher rates
- You attract clients who already value your specific approach
Your most valuable insights often hide in plain sight. They're the things you do so naturally you barely consider them work.
This week, try identifying one aspect of your work that clients frequently struggle with, and share your approach to solving it. It could be as simple as a social media post or a short email to past clients.

What We're Loving
Deep Work
I've already started reading next month's book for the Boss Responses book club and it's a keeper! We're reading Deep Work by Cal Newport. This book is a game-changer. Newport breaks down why focused, undistracted work is the key to doing high-quality, meaningful work—and how to actually make it happen. If you’ve ever felt stuck in the cycle of shallow tasks and endless notifications, this book will help you reclaim your time and get real work done. (affiliate link)
Need a Travel Bag?
I've been influenced. I love watching product review videos and a TikTok reviewer who focuses on travel items introduced me to my new personal carry on item. I've used it for a couple of short weekend car trips too. The Weekender Bag by Bagsmart is lightweight, holds all the stuff I need handy plus enough clothes for a couple of days if I need them, and it has shoe space! Bonus: it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Wrap Up
The difference between freelancers who transform their businesses and those who stay stuck isn't knowledge—it's action.
So here's my challenge to you: Take just 30 minutes this week to implement one idea from this newsletter. Maybe that's:
- Jotting down three unique perspectives you have about your industry
- Creating a simple social post sharing how you approach a common problem
- Recording a quick voice note about a lesson you've learned that could help potential clients
Remember, you don't need to have everything figured out to start. Your perspective is valuable precisely because it's yours and it's shaped by your unique experiences and insights.
The clients who will value you most are waiting to hear exactly what you have to say.
