How To Grow Your Writing Business With The 1% UP Technique

How to consistently grow your business without spending a lot of time or energy (or money) by using the 1% UP technique.

Okay, I admit it.

I hate waiting in line for anything.

Recently, I had to go see my GP to get the results from my regular yearly "wellness check".

She was super busy, so yup, she was late.

And I sat there cooling my heels, listening to the kid coughing in the corner, and trying not to think of all the things I needed to get done that day.

Instead, I made a couple of really important decisions

  1. I decided to make use of this unexpected opportunity to sit and do nothing other than think.
  2. And I decided to think about how I could apply what I call the 1% UP technique to my business.

I love the 1% UP technique 🥰 🥰

Basically, you focus on discovering (and doing) small things that will improve a process, or your cashflow or skill or whatever, by just 1%.  And then doing another 1% task or project the next day or week or month.

We're talking micro-steps or micro-projects here, so they are things that don't take a lot of effort or a lot of time.

But they DO move the needle.

And when you add them all up at the end of the month or quarter or year, you're going to see a pretty big shift from where you were last time.

Fortunately, I had a notebook with me and I got in a solid few minutes thinking about what my next 1% UP task/project could be.  I scribbled down 6 "move the needle" ideas.

After I got back to my desk, I turned them into 1% UP bright yellow Post-it notes that will now sit in my line of site on my desk ... until I get them done.

Here are a couple of them that are focused on maximising signups to my email list from my Online Business Launchpad podcast. And please, no judgment on my handwriting! 🤓

3 bright yellow Post-it notes that show examples of the 1% UP technique. The first one says "add blurb and link to shownotes prompt template to join email list". The second one says "create 1 lead magnet per category for OBL podcast. Include link in shownotes". The third one is blank

Once I've completed each task, I'll get the satisfaction of giving it a big tick and then crumpling it up and chucking it in the recycle bin.

Okay, so maybe that's a weird way of celebrating small successes, but hey, it works for me 😊 ✅.

So here's my challenge for you.

The next time you're standing in a queue or line somewhere, use that time to think about what 1% UP improvements you could make in your writing business ... ones that you could easily implement within the next couple of days.

Then go forth and do them!  And watch the rewards come in 🎁 🎉
