How Diverse is Your Writing Portfolio?

Subject: Is Your Writing Portfolio Holding You Back?
If you’ve ever felt stuck in one type of writing—or worried about finding work when a niche slows down—you’re not alone. Many freelance writers unknowingly limit themselves by keeping their portfolios too narrow.
That’s why this week’s blog post is all about diversifying your writing portfolio—why it matters, how it helps you land more clients, and what mistakes to avoid. Plus, I’m sharing tips on professionalism pitfalls that could be making you look less credible to potential clients (without you even realising it).
Thought Leadership Will Help You Find the Right Clients
And if you've noticed that some writers never seem to worry about where their next project is coming from while you're out there hustling hard for gigs on job boards? It might be because they've nailed the art of making their opinion heard.
This blog post from Treasa Edmond lays it out for you.

Resource Roundup

Book: Building A Story Brand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller
This book has been around since 2018, but the message it carries (and the framework it shares) is still completely relevant. For your own writing business AND for the clients you are helping.
Course: The HERO Framework
This course by Kirsty Boden-Stuart (affiliate link) walks you through the HERO Framework (with examples) that every writer needs to have mastered ... especially if you're writing content for other people.
If you're new to this newsletter, you should know that Kirsty was the one who built the Freelance Writers Online website and email list from scratch, before she handed it on to Treasa and me. She has a ton of experience as a marketer, especially in the not-for-profit space.
This course is super helpful if you're just getting into market your (or someone else's) business and a great refresher if you've been around for awhile. And it fits in nicely with the Story Brand book above.
Book: My Menopause Memoir by Tracy Minnoch-Nuku
Okay, so this book isn't about writing at all. But menopause is something that affects just about everyone at some stage. For women, it's a given that at some stage, you'll go through this life-changing phase. For some women it can even happen in your 20's and 30's.
And, like 2nd-hand smoke, the loved ones in our lives (partners, children, relatives, friends) can be seriously affected by what we go through during menopause ... in confusing and painful ways.
Author Tracy Minnoch-Nuku shares her no-holds barred menopause journey and interviews others about their experience with this stage of life.
What We're Loving

Portable / Travel Monitor
My husband brought me home this little gift for my "office in a backpack". It's a travel monitor that easily integrates with lots of devices, including my little Mac Mini. And all of it together (Mac Mini, monitor, keyboard and mouse), weighs quite a lot less than my old laptop does. Which is great for my back!
Wrap Up
And that's it for today. Have fun coming up with ways to diversify your portfolio. And be sure that your portfolio radiates professionalism. Until next week.
Take care and all the best.
