From Invisible to In-Demand: Positioning Yourself as a Writing Expert

From Invisible to In-Demand: Positioning Yourself as a Writing Expert

Ever feel like the best-kept secret in your industry? You know your writing skills are solid, but somehow clients aren't exactly beating down your door. Don't worry—you're not alone. I've been there and so have most of the freelancers I know.

We start our journey focused on the craft itself: perfecting sentences, meeting deadlines, and making clients happy. But there's a crucial piece many of us miss—positioning ourselves as experts rather than just service providers.

Think of your freelance career as having three potential levels:

Level 1: The Task Doer. "I write blog posts." At this level, clients come to you with assignments, and you complete them. Simple, but limiting.

Level 2: The Expert. "I write SEO-optimized blog posts that drive organic traffic for B2B software companies." Now you're speaking the language of expertise and results.

Level 3. The Strategic Partner "I develop editorial calendars and content frameworks that help tech companies establish thought leadership and convert readers into qualified leads." At this level, you're not just writing—you're solving business problems.

Which level describes your current positioning? Be honest!

The way you introduce yourself (in your marketing, your portfolio, and your client communication) matters more than you might think. Compare these two introductions:

"I'm a freelance writer who works with different companies."

"I help B2B tech companies tell their stories through content that educates their audience and drives qualified leads."

See the difference? The second version positions you as someone who delivers value, not just words on a page.

Want clients to see you as more than just a writer? Start thinking—and talking—like a strategic partner.

What We're Loving

A Great Footrest

I know it sounds silly, but a footrest has made my time at my desk more comfortable and productive. It's not height issue for me. I've found that the longer I sit, the more my lower back hurts (am I getting old?). I mentioned it in my Strategy Bosses community and one of the participants recommended this foot rest from Amazon (affiliate link). Oh. My. Goodness. It's a night and day difference. If you've never tried a footrest at your desk, I highly recommend.

Desk Fan

This $15 Koonie desk fan (affiliate link) is one of the best purchases I've made in the last year. My office is a work in progress and I have no windows. That's an issue, because I'm one of those people who feels like they are suffocating without moving air. This little fan blows. Literally. And it's quiet enough that you can't hear it when I'm on a call or recording a podcast or training.
